Project details
Golap Group Gram Panchayat implemented a comprehensive Watershed Development and Solar Water Pump Project to address water scarcity, groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and agricultural challenges faced by the local community. The watershed intervention included the desilting of five major nala bunds and a historical pond—Ranpal/Navedar Bund, Dhopatewadi Nala Bund, More Wathar Nala Bund, Musalimwadi Nala Bund, and the Historical Pond. A total of 47,146 cubic meters of silt was removed, creating approximately 4.71 crore litres of additional water storage and groundwater recharge capacity. In addition, 1,600 cubic meters of stone pitching was completed for soil conservation and nala strengthening. To further strengthen sustainable water access, a 7.5 HP solar water pump system was installed for village drinking water supply, reducing dependence on conventional electricity and supporting clean-energy-based rural infrastructure.
Impact
The project has generated significant water conservation, groundwater recharge, agricultural, drinking water, and renewable energy benefits. The desilting work restored approximately 47,146 cubic meters of water storage capacity, equivalent to 4.71 crore litres, improving natural rainwater retention and groundwater recharge. The intervention is expected to positively impact nearby water sources, including 28+ wells and 23+ borewells, within approximately a 500-metre radius of the project area. The improved groundwater availability is expected to benefit approximately 850+ acres of agricultural land and 230+ farmers, creating better opportunities for cultivation of high-value crops, fruits, and vegetables. The project also supports drinking water security for approximately 2,000 villagers, with 2 village drinking water supply wells benefiting from the intervention. The drinking water scarcity period is expected to reduce by approximately 2 months annually. Further strengthening the project’s sustainability, a 7.5 HP solar water pump system has been installed, generating approximately 10,500 kWh of renewable energy annually and providing estimated annual electricity cost savings of approximately ₹1.20 lakh. The solar system has an expected lifespan of 25+ years, with minimal maintenance requirements, and incorporates smart mobile-based monitoring and remote operation. Together, the watershed and solar interventions strengthen climate resilience, reduce dependence on conventional and fossil-fuel-based energy, improve agricultural livelihoods, enhance drinking water security, and promote sustainable rural development.

Project details
The proposed 7.5 HP Solar Water Pump System at Dhopatwadi, Golap, is designed to provide a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution for the village drinking water supply system. The project aims to reduce the village’s dependence on conventional MSEB electricity, which contributes to recurring operational costs and can affect the reliability of water pumping. The proposed system will operate primarily through solar photovoltaic (PV) panels during daylight hours, directly powering the water pump without battery storage. Approximately 15 solar panels of 550 Wp capacity are proposed for the 7.5 HP system, along with a solar controller/DC-to-AC inverter, electrical protection systems, wiring, and necessary accessories. A manual changeover arrangement will also be provided to enable switching between solar power and MSEB electricity whenever required, ensuring continuity of the drinking water supply. The system will also include mobile-based monitoring and remote ON/OFF control, wherever technically feasible, for efficient operation and monitoring.
Impact
The solar water pumping system is expected to generate approximately 10,500 kWh of electricity annually, significantly reducing the requirement for conventional grid electricity for pumping operations. At an average electricity tariff of ₹11.50 per kWh, the project is expected to generate annual electricity cost savings of approximately ₹1,20,750. With an estimated electricity price escalation of 2% annually, the long-term financial benefit is expected to increase over the operating life of the system. The estimated payback period is approximately 7–7.5 years. The solar PV panels are expected to have a lifespan of approximately 25 years, while the complete pumping system is expected to operate effectively for 15+ years with relatively low maintenance requirements. The project will also reduce dependence on conventional and fossil-fuel-based energy sources, thereby contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and supporting climate-resilient rural infrastructure.

The system will support the village drinking water supply arrangement at Dhopatwadi-Golap, providing a more reliable and sustainable energy source for water pumping and reducing dependence on grid electricity.

Velhe-Budruk, located in Velhe Tehsil of Pune district, lies about 65 km from Pune city. Predominantly dependent on rice farming, the village maintains strong agrarian roots while gradually embracing change due to its proximity to the city. With nearly 50% of the population being women and a significant number of girls enrolled in school, the village shows a quiet but growing push towards progress. Families are increasingly valuing education, yet basic infrastructure gaps remain a barrier.

After villagers raised concerns, Deepastambha Charitable Trust (DCT), with financial support from the R. M. Tulpule Charitable Trust, installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water ATM. This marks a major step toward ensuring safe drinking water and reflects a strong commitment to the health and future of Velhe-Budruk.
Impact
The Water ATM in Velhe-Budruk is more than just a water solution—it is a health safeguard, a time-saver, and a financially sustainable community asset. By offering clean, chilled drinking water at just ₹5 for 20 litres, it not only makes safe water accessible to all but also empowers the Gram Panchayat to raise funds for further development. Above all, it instills a deeper understanding of water conservation and responsible usage among villagers.
