Project name: - Water shed management Project – De-seating of Cement Nala Bandh
Village Details
Village Name – Group Gram Panchayat Panchanadi Tal- Dapoli; Dist – Ratnagiri Pin code – 415712
Project details
Panchanadi village, along with Aghari and Borivali, forms the Panchanadi Gram Panchayat in Dapoli Taluka of Ratnagiri District. Despite receiving moderate rainfall, the region faces persistent challenges in water retention and sustainable groundwater levels, making watershed interventions critically important.

To address these issues, we have undertaken the desilting of five cement nala bunds to improve groundwater recharge, revive natural streams, and support long-term biodiversity conservation. Based on primary and expert surveys, these five nala bunds were identified for desilting, along with stone pitching for soil conservation. Approximately 38,000 cubic meters of silt have been removed as part of this initiative, significantly enhancing the water-holding capacity of the structures and promoting sustainable water management in the region
Impact
The watershed project undertaken in Panchanadi Gram Panchayat—including the desilting of five cement nala bunds and soil conservation through stone pitching—has created a significant positive impact on the region. With approximately 38,000 cubic meters (3.8 crore litres of ground water recharge) of silt removed, the water-holding capacity of the bunds has been greatly improved, leading to enhanced groundwater recharge. This will ensure better water availability throughout the year, especially during the dry summer months. As a result, farmers growing mango and supari (areca nut) will now have improved access to irrigation water, which is expected to boost crop productivity and fruit quality, thereby improving their livelihoods. The increased soil moisture and revival of natural streams will also support local biodiversity, restore natural habitats and encourage ecological balance. Furthermore, by enhancing water security and soil health, the project strengthens the region’s climate resilience, helping the community better withstand droughts and unpredictable weather patterns. Overall, this initiative not only addresses immediate water challenges but also contributes to long-term sustainable development and environmental conservation in the Panchanadi region.
